At Hot Solar Solutions we know there are A LOT of questions about solar, how it works and the benefits for homeowners and the environment, in this week’s blog we hope to answer more of those questions, we hope they will spark even MORE questions and that you will contact us to talk in more detail!
Here are the three major terms that will help us on our solar journey:
Solar Energy –the easiest way to describe solar energy is the energy produced by the sun. The earth absorbs about 3,850,000 exajoules (EJ) of solar energy every year. If we could harness just ONE HOUR of this energy, we could cover the world`s entire energy demand for ONE WHOLE YEAR!
That is where Solar Power comes in—this is the process of harnessing all that energy and making it USEABLE. Solar cells capture and convert sunlight (solar energy) into electricity. Our favorite example of this is the solar calculator we all had as kids….in order to turn it off you had to cover up the solar cells—there was no “off” button!
Which leads us to today’s Solar Panels—both the solar calculator and NASA Satellites use the same type of cells that allow us to power our homes and business today. They are called PV Cells and while it is a somewhat complicated process, the end result is that these cells, convert solar energy into electricity. When we wire these cells together they form a module, modules are then wired together to form a panel. When we group the panels together we call it an array—and several array’s grouped together form an array field.
